Review: Dark Souls

Platform played: PS3

Dark Souls: known for its extreme difficulty, but insanely addicting and creative game play. A game that is easy to hate from the start, but if given a chance, will most likely become your latest obsession. Its not a game that is meant to baby you and hold your hand through every twist and turn hoping you make it to the end. It wants you to struggle, to really thirst for the end, and what it has to hold along the way. There is no large sign that says "THIS WAY" or a GPS route to take you from point A to point B. After the beginning area, you are literally left to fend for yourself and make it through the rest of the game on your own.

With that said, walkthroughs are almost a must for Dark Souls: without them, you'll likely miss many valuable, key items you will need later on, and its extremely easy to make a wrong turn at its many locations, getting you stuck somewhere far too hard for your characters abilities and leading you to becoming mince meat, losing all your souls and banked humanity in the process. The Dark Souls world is very non-linear, so for a newcomer, you won't know which areas are safe right off the bat and which are meant for much higher leveled players (New Londo Ruins anyone?). Easily googling the best route to take for a beginner will help you on your journey tremendously, even if you aren't one for guides or secret spoilers. And on behalf of all Dark Souls enthusiasts, please just Google it for your own sake.

Estus flasks, humanity, souls, and bonfires will become your best friends in this game. Right now you may have no idea what that means, but pay close attention to them and their purpose throughout the game. Being handed all this stuff from the beginning without any explanation can be pretty intimidating and kind of annoying when you have no idea what they're for, but these items are the key to catching onto Dark Souls's gameplay and learning how to properly advance in the game.

As for my opinion, Dark Souls has easily went from sitting on my game shelf for a year straight to flying straight up to my number one spot of favorite game ever on the PS3 platform (and I love quite a few with all my being, so that's kind of a big deal). After beating it for the first time just a month ago to already being half way through my second playthrough, Dark Souls has so much to offer at such a positive toll. You may bang your head against the wall and throw your controller on the ground a few more times than once, but you really come to appreciate the challenge from it all and how one world, without loading screens or pauses, can be so diverse and unique in its own right. One minute you'll be squashing fire-breathing bugs, the next you'll be hammering crystal made rock men, or slicing the head off a Hydra that's spitting water at you. Its like every game you've ever loved mashed into one awesome story with some of the most iconic bosses and NPC's in the modern day world. With infinite leveling up possibilities to choose from, a billion armor and weapon combinations to collect, descending down the interesting path of magic use if you wish, and an all around jam-packed world that you could endlessly roam, Dark Souls is a never-ending journey of non-stop fun that you'll find yourself smiling at and enjoying more than you will being angered by the countless deaths you've racked up in just the few past hours. Seriously, embrace this game, learn to love it, and praise that holy sun.
